Body of Ulster industrialist to be cremated in US

The body of Ulster industrialist Sir Allen McClay, who died in the United States on Tuesday, will not be returned to Northern Ireland for burial.

Sir Allen, who was 77, had been receiving treatment for cancer in the Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia.

It has been decided that his remains will be cremated in the U.S.

A Service of Remembrance will be held in Northern Ireland on a date to be announced.

Many warm tributes have been paid to Sir Allen who made his millions in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. His first company, Galen, was established in 1968 and went on to become a world leader.

He retired from the company in 2001 but then bought back several divisions of the operation to establish a new entity, Almac. This company was also a success with facilities in Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and the U.S.

Knighted by the Queen in 2005, Sir Allen went on to found the McClay Foundation which channelled millions of pounds into cancer research.

Sir Allen is survived by his wife, Lady Heather, whom he married in November last year.
