Prime Minister pays tribute to soldier from Coleraine

Prime Minister David Cameron has paid tribute to Ranger Aaron McCormick the Royal Irish Regiment soldier from Coleraine who was killed in Afghanistan.

Ranger McCormick, who was 22, died in an explosion while on duty in Helmand province. He had been helping to clear an area of improvised explosive devices when he was caught in a blast.

Mr. Cameron told MPs in the House of Commons that Ranger McCormick had been “tough, selfless, good humoured and full of compassion”.

He added: “He showed astonishing bravery, leading the way in clearing IEDs for the safety of local civilians and his fellow soldiers.”

Earlier this week Ranger McCormick’s commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Colin Weir paid tribute to the young soldier.

He said the death had left “a gap in our ranks which no ordinary man could fill.”
