Headstone error corrected at grave of Anne Bronte

A PLAQUE which has been placed at the grave of the writer Anne Bronte has corrected an error made on the original headstone.

When Ms. Bronte was buried in St. Mary’s Churchyard in Scarborough in 1849 the headstone stated she had died aged 28, when in fact she had been 29. Several other errors were contained on the original stonework, but these were corrected under orders from Charlotte when she visited her sister’s grave months after the burial. However, the mistake about her age remained (see photograph above).

Reference to the error is made on the plaque which also reproduces the details contained on the headstone which is now difficult to read because of weather corrosion over the past 164 years.

The Bronte Society has placed the plaque on the grave, close to the old headstone.

Anne Bronte, who wrote Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, had been suffering from tuberculosis and had travelled to Scarborough believing that the sea air would be good for her health. However, she passed away three days after arriving at the resort.

She is the only one of the Brontes not to have been buried at the family home in Haworth, West Yorkshire.
