American country singer Mindy McCready is dead at 37

THE American country singer Mindy McCready was found dead at her home in Arkansas. She was 37.

Police in Heber Springs had been called to the singer’s home following reports of a gunshot having been heard. Suicide was blamed.

Ms. McCready, who was born in Florida, had moved to Nashville when she was 18 to follow her dream of becoming a singer. Within a year she had signed a record deal.

Her first single, Ten Thousand Angels, reached number six on Billboard’s Hot Country chart, with her debut album selling over one million copies. Another song from that album, Guys Do It All The Time (see below), went on to reach number one.

In all, she recorded five studio albums and had 12 hits in the U.S. country music charts. However, she had not yet made a major impact on the country music charts in the U.K. She once reached number 41 in 1998 with the single Oh Romeo.

But away from the music world, Ms. McCready’s private life was extremely troubled. She battled substance abuse and was reported to have tried to take her own life on two occasions.

In the weeks leading up to her death, Ms. McCready’s partner, the record producer David Wilson, was found dead; a judge ordered that her two children should be taken into care and she was ordered to enter rehab.

In an interview she gave following Mr. Wilson’s sudden death, the singer said:  “I have never gone through anything this painful. David didn’t just touch my heart, he touched my soul.”
