Road deaths fall in Northern Ireland

The number of deaths on roads in Northern Ireland has fallen compared to last year.

So far this year 51 people have been killed on the roads. By this time last year a total of 102 deaths had taken place.

The total number of road deaths last year was 115.

If the downward trend continues then 2010 could have the lowest number of deaths since records began in Northern Ireland in 1931.

News of the fall in road deaths was highlighted at the start of Road Safety Week.

Environment Minister Edwin Poots appealed for everyone to take care on the roads.

He said: I implore everyone to always pay attention, slow down, wear your seatbelt and avoid driving while over tired or if drink or drugs have been consumed.

“Pedestrians should always use footpaths, where possible, and wear bright or fluorescent clothing at night.”

The Minister added: “With darker evenings, wet roads and more traffic — I would appeal to everybody on the roads to take extreme care.”
