Tributes are paid to Archers actor Arnold Peters

TRIBUTES have been paid to the Archers actor Arnold Peters who has passed away at the age of 87.

Mr. Peters had played the character of Jack Woolley on the Radio 4 soap for 31 years, although his connections to the programme had dated back to the early 1950s when he had first appeared in another role.

He had taken the character of Jack Woolley from being a ruthless businessman to being more mellow and finally to being a victim of Alzheimer’s Disease — an illness which the actor was to suffer himself.

The recording of his final scenes, which were broadcast in July 2011, had been carried out at his home near Northampton.

Over the years Mr. Peters had made appearances in many television series including Porridge, The Onedin Line, All Creatures Great and Small, and Last of the Summer Wine. He last TV credit was for an appearance in Doctors in 2000.

The tributes were led by June Spencer who played his wife Peggy on the Archers, describing him as a “complete pro”. She continued: “Arnold was very conscientious — he always turned in a good performance no matter what we were doing. He loved acting. It was his life.”
