Tributes are paid to former Hollywood star Jane Russell

Tributes have been paid to former Hollywood star Jane Russell who had died aged 89.

Ms. Russell was a film star pin-up in the 1940s and 1950s, but had effectively retired from tinsel town by the 1960s.

She shot to stardom in 1943 when Howard Hughes cast her in the western The Outlaw.

As part of the publicity surrounding the film Hughes announced he had designed a bra for his new star.

Years later Ms. Russell was to reveal she had thrown the bra aside and worn her own during filming.

She will be best known for roles in The Paleface (1948) in which she starred with Bob Hope and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) which saw her star alongside Marilyn Monroe.

But by the 1960s the sun had already set on her career.

Ms. Russell always said he wanted to “die in the saddle” and did not want to simply sit at home and grow old.

She remained active within her home community in California until recently.

The former star was married three times and adopted three children.

She had established an adoption agency which over the years had helped thousands of American couples adopt children from outside the United States.
