Tributes are paid to veteran Doctor Who actor

Tributes have been paid to Nicholas Courtney the veteran Doctor Who actor who has died aged 81.

Mr. Courtney had a long association with the popular BBC TV series.

He played the role of pompous Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart in more than 100 episodes.

During his time with the show Mr. Courtney acted alongside five Doctors.

He first appeared as the Brigadier in 1968 when the Doctor was being played by Patrick Troughton.

He made his final appearance in 1989 but reprised his role in 2008 to appear in the Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures.

However, his ailing health was to curtail further appearances.

He had become honorary president of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society in 1997.

Apart from his association with the BBC series, Mr. Courtney had appeared in a wide range of TV dramas including The Saint, The Bill and Casualty.

Among those to pay tribute to him was former Doctor character Tom Baker who visited his friend just days before he died.

He said: “Of all the characters in Doctor Who there is no doubt that he was the most loved by the fans.

“Nick’s close friends simply adored him. There was a certain innocence in his personality that was utterly endearing. We shall miss him terribly.”
