Tributes are paid to local journalist

TRIBUTES have been paid to well-known local journalist, Colin Duncan, who has passed away suddenly.

Colin, who was 57, had for many years worked in local broadcasting as both a reporter and an editor.

The father of two began his career in local newspapers in the County Antrim area before moving into radio news with Downtown Radio. After proving himself as a highly capable news reporter, Colin was eventually promoted to the position of Duty News Editor.

Over the years, Colin established himself as a highly professional news editor who had a reputation for doggedly pursuing stories without fear or favour.

He had a tough, no-nonsense style. Indeed, a leading member of one of Northern Ireland’s larger political parties must have regretted telephoning Colin one day to challenge him on the way a particular story had been covered. Colin politely discussed the matter, before telling the politician: “Do I tell you how to run a political party? Then please don’t tell me how to run a newsroom!”

Colin set high standards, not only for himself as a journalist, but also for everyone on his team.

Away from journalism, Colin enjoyed relaxing with a game of golf. He excelled at the game and was a keen member of the Press Golf Society, being selected on several occasions as a member of the society’s inter-provincial team.

Colin passed away on Wednesday (March 9) in hospital. His early death has shocked and saddened his many friends and former colleagues. Perhaps the sadness felt by so many was best summed up by one of his former colleagues, Eamonn Mallie, who tweeted: “Colin Duncan departed our circle today. He was a brilliant journalist. Ar dheis Dé a anam.”

The Funeral, which was attended by many of Colin's former colleagues and friends, took place on Wednesday (March 16) with a Service in Melville & Co's Funeral Home, York Road, Belfast. Committal then followed at Roselawn Crematorium.
