TRIBUTES have been paid to the American actor James Rebhorn who has passed away at the age of 65.
In a career which spanned more than 50 years, Mr. Rebhorn would often play characters who were unlikely to endear themselves to audiences, but he never failed to deliver fine performances.
Recently, he was seen by British audiences playing the father of CIA agent Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) in the hit TV series Homeland.
Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Rebhorn went on to enjoy a career on stage, TV and in films. His many movie credits included My Cousin Vinny (1992), Basic Instinct (1992), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) and Meet the Parents (2000). His other movie work included playing the weaselly headmaster in Scent Of A Woman (1992), which starred Al Pacino (see below). He also appeared in the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day, in which played the US secretary of state.
On television he appeared in a wide range of shows over the years including Kojak, The Equalizer, Law & Order, Boston Legal and The Good Wife. He also appeared in the last episode of Seinfeld in the role of a district attorney.
Recent credits on television included work on the series Enlightened and White Collar.
He regularly returned to the theatre, producing critically acclaimed performances in Broadway productions of 12 Angry Men and Our Town.
In 1992, Mr. Rebhorn was diagnosed with melanoma. He continued to work until only weeks before he passed away at his home in New Jersey.
Mr. Rebhorn is survived by his wife Rebecca and daughters Emma and Hannah.
Among the many tributes was one from actor Tom Arnold who tweeted: “RIP. This actor was amazing. You didn’t know him but, trust me, you knew him”.
