Tributes are paid to actor Barry Jackson

TRIBUTES have been paid to the actor Barry Jackson who has passed away at the age of 75.

For many fans he will be best remembered for his role as pathologist George Bullard in the long-running TV series Midsomer Murders. He had first appeared in the pilot episode for the show in 1997 and remained a member of the cast until his retirement in 2011.

The hit show, which was sold to 188 countries, featured detective chief inspector Tom Barnaby (played by John Nettles) investigating an implausibly high number of murders — mostly committed in quite English villages.

The high homicide rate depicted resulted in Mr. Jackson hosting a tongue-in-cheek documentary in 2008 called Surviving Midsomer: An Insider’s Guide (see below).

His career began in the 1960s with appearances in shows such as A For Andromeda, The Spread Of The Eagle and Dr. Who — he returned to the show in 1979 to play the character Drax in two episodes.

At one point, Mr. Jackson even worked as a stunt man and fight director but this took up only a short period in what was a long and successful acting career. For more than 40 years he made appearances in some of the most popular shows in British television, including Hard Cases, All Creatures Great and Small, Minder, Bernard’s Watch, The Bill and Doctors.

His film credits included Ryan’s Daughter (1970), Barry Lyndon (1975), Aces High (1976) and Mr. Love (1985), see below.

Mr. Jackson is survived by his third wife, Denise, and by four daughters and two sons.
