Tributes are paid to singer songwriter Jackie Lomax

TRIBUTES have been paid to the singer-songwriter Jackie Lomax who has passed away at the age of 69.

Mr. Lomax, who was born in the Wirral, Merseyside, was a contemporary of The Beatles and was part of what became known as the Merseybeat scene. He appeared regularly at the Cavern Club and played with a number of bands including The Dynamites, The Undertakers and The Lomax Alliance.

When The Beatles formed their label, Apple Records, Mr. Lomax was the first person they signed up. George Harrison wrote and produced his debut single with the label, Sour Milk Sea (see below). However, the record did not enjoy commercial success. During his time with Apple he recorded with The Beatles — singing on Dear Prudence and Hey Jude — and with Eric Clapton.

After leaving Apple, Mr. Lomax spent time recording in America before returning to the U.K. in 1973 to join the progressive rock band Badger, before returning to the U.S. in 1975.

However, over the years, his record releases never enjoyed the level of sales that many critics believed they deserved, but he still enjoyed a career which spanned 50 years. His last solo album, The Ballad of Liverpool Slim, was released in 2002.

News of his death was released on the singer-songwriter’s website. In a statement, his family said Mr. Lomax had passed away following a short illness.

The statement continued: “Jackie deeply appreciated the fans who followed him throughout his 50-year career and his family and friends would like to thank each and every one of you for your support and loyalty.

“For Jackie, it was always about the music and he had only recently put the finishing touches to his next album, Against All Odds, which will be released by Angel Air Records towards the end of this year or early next year.”
