Tributes are paid to Roger Lloyd Pack

TRIBUTES have been paid to the actor Roger Lloyd Pack who has passed away at the age of the 69.

He will be best remembered by his millions of fans as Trigger in the BBC comedy series Only Fools and Horses (see below). He appeared as the gormless roadsweeper in practically every episode of the long-running series, which also starred Sir David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst.

Landing the role of Trigger in 1981 had marked a major turning point in his career, but it also led him to reflect that it had been “both a blessing and a curse”. His last appearance as Trigger was in show’s Christmas special in 2003.

Mr. Lloyd Pack was the son of actor Charles Lloyd Pack. After studying at RADA, the young Lloyd Pack had begun to develop his career with small roles on stage and screen. His early appearances on television included roles on shows such as The Avengers.

In recent years, Mr. Lloyd Pack had enjoyed success in another long-running comedy series — The Vicar of Dibley. He played the character of farmer Owen Newitt in the series which also starred Dawn French.

His appearance as Barty Crouch Snr. in the film Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire (2006) introduced him to a new generation of fans. Other film work included playing Inspector Mendel in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in 2011.

He also continued to work on the stage, including appearing at The Globe Theatre in London in 2012 in the production of Richard III.

Away from politics, Mr. Lloyd Pack was a committed socialist who had campaigned for nuclear disarmament. He was also a life-long supporter of Tottenham Hotspur.

Tributes were led by fellow actor Sir David Jason who said his friend had been “a very quiet, kind and unassuming actor who was a pleasure to work with”.

Sir David continued: “Although he played the simple soul of Trigger in Only Fools and Horses, he was a very intelligent man and a very fine actor capable of many roles. I shall remember him with fondness and for all the good times we had together.”

Mr. Lloyd Pack passed away after suffering pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife Jehane, their three sons and his daughter, the actress Emily Lloyd.
