New Zealand to hold a national memorial service

Plans are being drawn up in New Zealand to hold a national memorial service in the wake of the Christchurch earthquake.

The country’s Prime Minister John Key has indicated that the service will take  place within the next three weeks.

Mr. Key announced plans for the service after telling citizens that the rescue operation had ended and was now a recovery operation as there was no longer any hope of finding people alive in collapsed buildings.

The last person to be found alive in one of the buildings was over a week ago, the day after the earthquake struck.

Government officials believe the death toll could rise to as high as 240.

Prime Minister Key said: “All New Zealanders will want to mourn that loss and to grieve for those that have lost their lives.”
