Actress Julie Harris passes away

THE American actress Julie Harris has passed away at the age of 87.

Ms. Harris had enjoyed success on stage and screen and her work included award winning performances on Broadway, in films such as East Of Eden with James Dean, and on television in the soap Knots Landing.

She had first appeared on Broadway in 1945, but it was her performance in the 1950 production of The Member Of The Wedding that was to make her a star. She reprised her role for the film adaptation in 1953 for which she received an Oscar nomination.

Over the years she produced many great performances on Broadway which were to result in five Tony Awards as well as five more nominations — she jointly holds the record for receiving the most awards with Angela Lansbury and Audra McDonald. She also received a special lifetime achievement Tony in 2002.

On the big screen Ms Harris appeared in more than 30 movies. These included East Of Eden (1955), see below, The Haunting (1963) and Bad Manners (1997). 

She also made many appearances on television shows and in TV films and was the winner of three Emmy Awards. In the 1980s she played the country music singer Lilimae Clements in Knots Landing.

Ms. Harris passed away at her home in Massachusetts after suffering congestive heart failure.
