Funerals take place of drowning victims

THE Funerals have taken place of the teenage boy and the man who drowned at a disused quarry near Annalong at the weekend.

15-year-old Kevin O’Hare had been swimming with friends at Paul’s Quarry (see photo) off the Glasdrumman Road, Annalong, on Saturday when he got into difficulties. The other victim, 39-year-old Colin Polland had rushed to the scene in response to calls for help. He died while trying to help the teenager.

The schoolboy had lived at Gransha, Dromara, He attended St. Malachy’s High School in Castlewellan and was also a keen GAA player with Dromara GAC.

Mr. Polland was originally from Newcaslte and was living in London. It is understood the father-of-two had been in the Annalong area at the weekend on holiday.

The Funerals of both victims took place on Wednesday, June 5.

The Funeral Mass for Kevin was held in St. Michael’s Church, Finnis, at 12 noon. He was buried in the adjoining cemetery.

Mr. Polland’s funeral took place in Bryansford. Requiem Mass was held at 1 o’clock in St. Patrick’s Church. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Glasdrumman.
