Turkey tycoon Bernard Matthews passes away

The turkey tycoon Bernard Matthews has passed away. He was 80.

Mr. Matthews started his poultry company in 1950 in rather modest circumstances.

He bought 20 turkey eggs and a secondhand incubator. Two years later he had raised production to 3,000 eggs.

By the mid-1950s Mr. Matthews had bought a derelict mansion near Norwich to establish a base for his company. Great Witchingham Hall remains the headquarters of the Bernard Matthews company.

Mr. Matthews appeared in the company’s advertising for many years and will be remembered for the “bootiful” catchphrase.

Tributes to Mr. Matthews have been led by Noel Bartram, group chief executive of the Matthews company.

He said: I have personally known Bernard for well over 30 years, and on behalf of myself and my fellow colleagues, I wish to express our great sorrow and extend our thoughts and sympathies to the family.

“Rarely has any business been as synonymous with the hard work and values of one man. It was Bernard who grew and developed this company through his entrepreneurial spirit, and clear focus.”
