Former top snooker referee Len Ganley passes away

TRIBUTES have been paid to the former top snooker referee Len Ganley who had died aged 68.

Mr. Ganley, who was from Lurgan, became one of the most recognisable officials in snooker during what was regarded as the sport’s boom years in the 1980s.

He had been gifted amateur snooker player before becoming a referee.

During his career he was in charge of four World Championships — 1983, 1987, 1990 and 1993.

Such was his standing in the game and his popularity with fans that Mr. Ganley even appeared in an advertisement for a beer company in which he crushed a cue ball in his gloved hands.

He made an M.B.E. in 1994 for his work with charities and for services to snooker.

Among those to pay tribute to Mr. Ganley was former world champion Steve Davis.

He said: “Len did a very good job of being a referee and a personality at the same time.

“He knew the game as a player, having made century breaks himself, so when he was in charge of your match it was nice to know how well he understood the game.”

Mr. Ganley’s Funeral will take place on Wednesday (August 31) in Lurgan. For full details see below.

Donations in lieu of flowers have been requested for the Paul Hunter Cancer Foundation. Get information.
