Slight fall recorded in the death rate in Northern Ireland

A SLIGHT FALL has been recorded in the number of deaths in Northern Ireland during the first quarter of this year.

The figures are contained in the Registrar General’s Quarterly Report which is issued through the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency.

During the period January to March a total of 4,019 deaths were registered. This is compared with 4,114 deaths during the same period in 2010.

However, while there were fewer deaths overall, there was a slight increase in the number of suicides, or suspected suicides.

The first quarter figures show that a total of 112 suicides were reported, compared with 96 during the same period last year.

The number of infant deaths was down during January to March when 22 such deaths were recorded compared with 39 in the first quarter of 2010.

Cancer caused the highest number of overall deaths, 1,040, which was slightly up on last year’s figure of 1,013.

The second highest cause of death was heart disease, although the latest figures recorded a slight fall.

A total of 603 deaths were recorded between January and March. During the same period last year there were 681 deaths attributed to heart disease.

Respiratory disease also continues to be a major cause of death in Northern Ireland.

During the first quarter 576 deaths were attributed to respiratory disease, compared with 597.

Eleven deaths were blamed on the superbug MRSA, four more than during the same period in 2010.

The infection Clostridium Difficile was recorded as the cause of 19 deaths, six fewer than during the first quarter last year.

Of the remaining deaths, 77 were blamed on alcohol (82) and 31 caused by drugs (33).
