Tributes are paid to the evangelist John Stott

Tributes have been paid to the Christian thinker and evangelist John Stott who has died aged 90.

The Reverend Stott, who was ordained as a Church of England minister,  was credited with leading a resurgence in evangelicalism in Britain as well as being an important influence across the world.

His friend, the evangelist Billy Graham led tributes to Dr. Stott, describing him  as “the most respected clergyman in the world”.

Dr. Stott will be remembered for his work in presenting complex theological issues in an accessible way.

He published more than 50 books to help Christians understand their faith, including the widely read Basic Christianity (see below).

He was also closely involved in preparing the Lausanne Covenant in 1974.

This was a Christian manifesto for the promotion of evangelism world-wide which was drawn-up when almost three thousand religious leaders attended a conference in Lausanne which was chaired by Dr. Stott.

He was made a C.B.E. in 2006.

Dr. Stott had retired from public ministry in 2007 when he was 86.
