Actor Richard Pearson passes away

THE ACTOR Richard Pearson has passed away, a day after his 93rd. birthday.

Born in Monmouth, Wales, Mr. Pearson had enjoyed a long and distinguished career on the stage, in films and on television.

He had made his stage debut in 1937, but his career had to be put on hold following the outbreak of war. He served in the Army and had risen to the rank of lieutenant colonel by the end of conflict.

Back in civvy street he resumed his acting career, appearing his productions in several of the smaller theatres away from the West End.

However, he had the misfortune to be in a production of Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party which was absolutely slaughtered by the critics when it opened in London’s Lyric Hammersmith in 1958.

But this was to be only a blip in his long career and he was soon enjoying success in other productions on the London stage, including alongside Maggie Smith in The Public Eye (1962).

His films included Scrooge (1951), The Yellow Rolls Royce (1964), Charlie Bubbles (1967), Pirates (1986) and Men In Black 2 (2002).

He was also a familiar face on television, appearing in a wide range of programes including One Foot In The Grave, in which he played Victor Meldrew’s absent minded brother.
