Funeral to take place of soldier from Coleraine

The funeral will take place this weekend of Ranger Aaron McCormick the Royal Irish Regiment soldier from Coleraine who was killed in Afghanistan.

Ranger McCormick, who was 22, died in an explosion while on duty in Helmand province. He had been helping to clear an area of improvised explosive devices when he was caught in a blast.

His funeral will be held on Saturday (December 4) in Macosquin.

Shortly after Ranger McCormick was killed the Prime Minister paid tribute to him in the House of Commoms.

Mr. Cameron told MPs that Ranger McCormick had been “tough, selfless, good humoured and full of compassion”.

He added: “He showed astonishing bravery, leading the way in clearing IEDs for the safety of local civilians and his fellow soldiers.”

Ranger McCormick’s commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Colin Weir also paid tribute to the young soldier.

He said the death had left “a gap in our ranks which no ordinary man could fill.”
