Well known artist passes away

The death has taken place of Robert Gordon Sellar who was a well known artist who lived in Northern Ireland. He was 90.

Mr. Sellar was born in Scotland but had lived in Northern Ireland for over 70 years.

He won a scholarship to the Belfast College of Art before entering teaching,  with posts at Larne Technical School and Belfast Royal Academy.

Mr. Sellar was with the Belfast College of Art when he was appointed in 1948  as Art Advisor to the County Londonderry Education Committee, which was to become the North Eastern Education and Library Board.  He retired from the post in 1984 when he went to live in Castlerock.

He worked in many media — including oil, watercolour, acrylic, pastels and printmaking. The example above is Goldcrest in Scots Pine.

Mr. Sellar’s work is held in many private and public collections across the world. He donated a large collection of his works to the Flowerfield Arts Centre in Portstewart.

He is survived by his wife Roberta and sons William and Frank.

Mr. Sellar’s Funeral will take place on Tuesday (November 30). A Service will be held in Castlerock Presbyterian Church where he had been commissioned to produce designs for the stained glass windows.
