TRIBUTES have been paid to the songwriter George Green who has died aged 59.

Mr. Green enjoyed successes with a number singing stars but he will be best remembered for his work with his childhood friend John Mellencamp.

The pair had attended the same Sunday school class in Indiana and became firm friends.

Their collaboration resulted in such hits as Hurts So Good (see below), Crumblin’ Down and Rain On The Scarecrow.

Mr. Green also wrote the title track for Barbara Streisand’s album Higher Ground (1997).

He also enjoyed success in the country music world, working closely with some Nashville’s top songwriters. Once such collaboration with Rick Giles produced Come On In (You Did the Best That You Could Do) which was a hit for The Oak Ridge Boys.

Another of hits was South December Road, which was recorded by Gary Morris.

Other stars who recorded Mr. Green’s work included Hall & Oats, Ricky Skaggs and Vanessa Williams.

Mr. Green had been suffering from lung cancer and passed away in Albuquerque.
