Music world bids farewell to Banjo Barney

THE Funeral of Barney McKenna, the last of the original Dubliners, has been held.

Banjo Barney, as he was affectionately known, passed away at his home in Howth, North Dublin, aged 72.

He had joined the Dubliners in 1962 alongside Luke Kelly, Ronnie Drew and Ciarán Bourke. Together they were to change the face of Irish music, becoming a worldwide success.

Mr. McKenna had recently finished a 50th. anniversary tour with the Dubliners, including a sell-out concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

He combined great musicianship with down-to-earth humour, entertaining fans with his funny stories between sets.

Only weeks ago he had joined fellow band members in Manchester to receive a lifetime achievement award at BBC Radio’s Folk Awards.

Tributes have been paid from across the music world.

Irish President Michael D. Higgins, who was a friend, also paid tribute to the musician.

He said: “Throughout his life and as a founding member of the Dubliners Barney McKenna made a major contribution to music and song and above all to the banjo as a instrument. His influence on and generosity to other instrumentalists was immense”.

Mr. McKenna’s Funeral took place on Monday  (April 9). The Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Patrick’s Church, Trim. Burial followed in St. Loman’s Cemetery, Trim.
