Tributes are paid to the actor David Kelly

ONE of Ireland best-known actors, David Kelly, has passed away. He was 82.

During his 50-year career, Mr. Kelly had become one of the most recognisable Irish actors on stage and screen.

His immense talent came to the fore in performances in everything from Shakespeare to Beckett.

Many fans will remember his performance as the feckless builder O’Reilly in Fawlty Towers or as Grandpa Joe Bucket in the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) opposite Johnny Depp.

His performance in the film Waking Ned (1998), in which he at one point does a spot of naked motorcycling, earned him a Screen Actors’ Guild nomination.

Among his TV credits were Oh, Father!, Strumpet City and Robin’s Nest.

Mr. Kelly received a lifetime achievement award at the Irish Film and Television Awards in 2005 (see below).

His final film performance was in the fantasy movie Stardust in 2009.

The Dublin-born actor passed away in hospital following a short illness.
