Music therapist Clive Robbins passes away

THE death has taken place of Clive Robbins who help develop a form of music therapy which is now used across the world. He was 84.

Mr. Robbins was teaching at a facility for disabled children in the English Midlands in 1958 when he met American composer Paul Nordoff, who was fascinated by the work being carried out at the school, which was part of a Rudolf Steiner community.

Mr Nordoff returned to the school months later when he began working with Clive Robins on the therapeutic potential of music. The pair were to develop what became known as the Nordoff Robbins approach. This uses musical improvisation to reach and engage people of all ages and with a wide range of conditions.

The men continued to work together for many years to develop the therapy further and to help establish its use in many countries.

In 1990 Mr. Robbins established the Nordoff Robbins Center for Music Therapy in New York. He continued to work at the complex until his death.
