Former goalkeeper Ernie Gregory passes away

THE death has taken place of Ernie Gregory the former West Ham goalkeeper who had a long career with the club. He was 90.

Mr. Gregory had joined the London side straight from school in 1936.

The club sent him for a spell with amateur club Leytonstone to gain more experience. Then World War Two began and Mr. Gregory went off to serve, first with the Essex Regiment and then with the R.A.F.

After the war ended he returned to the club and in 1946 became the side’s main keeper.

He made his debut in a match against Plymouth Argyle which West Ham won 4-1.

Mr. Gregory went on to make 481 appearances for the club and also had one call-up for the England B side in 1952 for a match against France.

When he retired from playing during the 1959-60 season he joined West Ham’s coaching staff, a position he held until 1987 — completing an association with the side which had spanned 50 years.
