The actress Marion Mathie passes away

THE actress Marion Mathie, who will be best remembered for her role in television’s Rumpole of the Bailey, has passed away. She was 86.

Ms. Mathie had taken over the role of the screen wife of barrister Horace Rumpole, played by Leo McKern, in 1987, see below. Referred to by Rumpole as “she who must be obeyed”, Ms. Mathie continued to play Hilda Rumpole until 1992.

She had spent most of the 1950s working for a number of repertory companies in England before beginning her career in television and the movies.

Her first film credit was in An Honourable Murder (1956), which starred Norman Wooland and Margaretta Scott.

She went on to appear in Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Lolita (1962) which starred James Mason and Shelley Winters, and was in Dracula Has Risen from the Grave (1968) alongside Christopher Lee.

Her television work included appearances in Dixon of Dock Green, Dr. Finlay’s Casebook, The Saint and Mapp & Lucia.
