American TV legend Dick Clark passes away

THE death has taken place of Dick Clark who was a legend in American television. He was 82.

Mr. Clark had been presenter of the show American Bandstand for more than 30 years. Through the show, which began in the 1950s, he had introduced Rock ‘n’ Roll into homes across America and helped make it respectable.

He was also a star-maker, giving lots of new bands and singers their big break.

Always dressed in a suit and tie, Mr. Clark became one of the best-known people on television. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Emmy Awards ceremony in 1994, see below.

He used his success to build a successful media empire — producing a range of shows. One of his productions was the New Year’s Eve TV special from New York’s Times Square, which is watched by millions of viewers every year.

Even after suffering a stroke in 2004, Mr. Clark returned to take part in the end-of-year show. He made his 40th. appearance on the show on December 31, 2011.

Mr. Clark never said goodbye at the end of any of his shows. His trademark was a salute and the words “So long”.
