Hero of the French Resistance Raymond Aubrac passes away

ONE of the heroes of the French Resistance, Raymond Aubrac, has passed away. He was 97.

He had joined the resistance movement with his late wife Lucie in 1942. The couple served with Jean Moulin who had been sent by General Charles de Gaulle to organise the resistance movement against the Nazis.

However, in June 1943 Moulin and Aubrac were arrested by the Gastapo in Lyon.

Hours later, as Mr. Aubrac was being transferred from the jail with other prisoners when the Resistance attacked the lorry they were being transported in.

Among the fighters was Lucie Aubrac who helped free her husband.

Jan Moulin was not among the group of prisoners. The Gastapo had singled him out for special attention. He was tortured before a decision was taken to send him to Berlin for further questioning, but the resistance leader died during the journey.

Raymond and Lucie Aubrac eventually found their way to London. After the war, the story of their work with Jean Moulin and the Resistance became legendary in France.

During the post-war period Mr. Aubrac, who had studied engineering, supervised the reconstruction of port facilities at Marseille. He later served as a director of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation.

President Nicolas Sarkozy led tributes to Mr. Aubrac, describing him as as “heroic figure”.
