Author of bestselling guide to the prevention of cancer passes away

DAVID Servan-Schreiber, who has died aged 50, began developing his ideas about adopting an integrative approach to the prevention and treatment of can cancer after being hit for a second time by the disease.

The French-born psychiatrist had been working with young researchers at the University of Pittsburgh in the early 1990s when his brain cancer was discovered by accident.

The team had been using an MRI scanner to map brain activity. When a volunteer had failed to show up for a scan, Dr. Servan-Schreiber stepped-in. The scan was to reveal the presence of a tumour.

After treatment the disease went into remission but it returned and following further treatment Dr. Servan-Schreiber began investigating if a person could do anything to help prevent cancer.

His first book Heal began to explore his belief that lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, could be beneficial. He went on to produce the book Anti-Cancer which became an international bestseller.

Dr. Servan-Schreiber had worked as a volunteer with Médecins Sans Frontiéres and was one of the founding directors of the organisation’s branch in the United States. He was also co-founder of the Center for Complementary Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.
