German radio station offers listeners a free funeral

A radio station in Germany is offering listeners the chance to win a free funeral.

The unusual competition is being run by Radio Galaxy in Aschaffenburg, North Bavaria.

Listeners are being asked to write the epitaph they would put on their headstone.

So far, more than 600 entries have been received by the station.

The prize is €3,000 to be spent on insurance to cover funeral expenses.

A spokesman for the company said the competition was aimed at breaking societies taboo about death.

However, the competition has been criticised by an funeral directors’ association in Germany which has branded the initiative as “tasteless”.

The association has launched a legal action against the station which is likely to be heard by a court later this month.
