Tributes are paid to former top cricketer

Tributes have been paid to the former Australian test cricketer Terry Jenner who has died aged 66.

Known as TJ, the leg-spinner began his professional career in 1963 for Western Australia and received his Test cap in 1970 for the tour of England.

He played in nine tests and claimed a total of 24 wickets before retiring from the international game in 1975.

He had played county cricket for Cambridgeshire in 1971 and 1972.

But Mr. Jenner was to face difficulties in his life away from cricket.

He battled with a gambling addiction and in 1988 was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison after using money from an employer to pay-off debts.

Following his release from jail, after serving 18 months, Mr. Jenner entered what he described as his “new life”.

He became a mentor and coach to the Australian leg-spin legend Shane Warne.

They were to work together for 20 years —  a period which Mr. Jenner called “the best”.

His skills as a bowling coach were sought out by other cricketers and he also did work for the England and Wales Cricket Board.

It was while working in England last year that Mr. Jenner suffered a heart attack. After weeks in hospital he was released and allowed to return to Australia.

Many tributes were paid to Mr. Jenner from across the cricketing world.

Shane Warne said of his old friend: “He was an amazing man, full of knowledge which he wanted to share. The great man will be missed.”
