Tributes are paid to leading businessman

Tributes have been paid to businessman Wallace McCain who co-founded a global food business.

He died, aged 81, after a long battle with cancer.

The Canadian co-founded the McCain Foods company which specialises in frozen food.

He started the company with his late brother Harrison in 1956. Today the firm operates in 44 countries and is the world’s largest producer of frozen chips.

Mr. McCain left the company in 1994 to become chairman of the Canadian food company Maple Leaf Foods.

He was rated as 512th. on the Forbes list of billionaires with an estimated personal wealth of £1.4 billion.

Mr. McCain was a noted philanthropist who had donated large sums to charity.

Among the many people to pay tribute to the businessman was the former prime minister of Canada Paul Martin.

He said: “He was a great Canadian who built a business which is now part of our history,

“His compassion and his generosity to so many causes dedicated to making the lives of Canadians better should never be forgotten.”
