Remains of RAF officer are returned by North Korea

The remains of an RAF officer killed during the Korean War have been returned to his family.

Flight Lieutenant Desmond Hinton died when his plane was shot down near Pyongyang in 1952.

He had been attached to the U.S. Air Force as part of the U.N. campaign in Korea.

The Flight Lieutenant had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross during World War II.

Over 1,000 British service personnel died in the Korean War, which raged between 1950 and 1953.

The handing over of the remains follows 11 years of effort on the part of Flt. Lt. Hinton’s brother, David.

Tests will now be carried out to confirm that the remains are those of the Flight Lieutenant before he is reburied in the United Kingdom.
