Tributes are paid to punk singer Poly Styrene

Tributes have been paid to the punk singer Poly Styrene who has died aged 53.

Born Marianne Elliot-Said she was to become one of the first female punk icons, enjoying fame with the X-Ray Spex.

Poly Styrene was inspired to form her band after seeing the Sex Pistols perform while out celebrating her 18th. birthday.

X-Ray Spex recorded just one album, Germ Free Adolescents (1978), before breaking-up, but Poly Styrene’s place in the history of punk was already assured.

She was to produce a solo album, Translucence (1980), before withdrawing from the music business to embrace the Hare Krishna faith and live in a temple in Hertfordshire.

The singer had been battling cancer.

A statement released on her Twitter site said: “We can confirm that the beautiful Poly Styrene, who has been a true fighter, won her battle to go to higher places.”

Among those to pay tribute was the singer Billy Bragg.

He said: “Punk without Poly Styrene and the X-Ray Spex wouldn’t have been the same.”
