Tributes are paid to the actor and director Jackie Cooper

Tributes have been paid to the actor and director Jackie Cooper who has died aged 88.

Mr. Cooper had been a child star in the 1920s when he appeared in a number of Hal Roach short comedies Our Gang.

He then went on to star in Skippy (1931), which was directed by his uncle Norman Taurog.

In one scene the young Cooper was required to cry. His uncle convinced him that his dog had just been shot – the tears duly flowed.

Taurog was to win a best director Oscar for the movie.

Mr. Cooper enjoyed success with a number of other films during the 1930s including The Champ and Treasure Island.

After war service in the U.S. Navy, during which he qualified as a pilot, he appeared in a number of shows on Broadway before going on to appear in TV sit-coms.

He then developed a career as a director. In 1980 he won a Directors Guild Award for the TV series The White Shadow, and also won two Emmys – for his work on The White Shadow and M.A.S.H.

But Mr. Cooper was to make a return to the big screen as an actor in what was the twilight of his life when he was cast as the newspaper editor Perry White in the Superman movie series.
