Tributes are paid to former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Bob Welch

TRIBUTES have been paid to the former Fleetwood Mac guitarist and singer Bob Welch who has died aged 66.

Mr. Welch had been with the band between 1971 and 1974

Among the albums he appeared on with the band were Future Games (released in 1971) and Bare Trees (released in 1972).

After leaving the group, Mr. Welch, who was from Los Angeles, enjoyed success as both a solo performer and with the hard rock group Paris, which he formed in 1977.

His first solo album, French Kiss, went platinum following its release in 1977. Two of the tracks, Sentimental Lady (see below) and Ebony Eyes, became hit singles.

Among the singers to record songs written by Mr. Welch are The Pointer Sisters, Kenny Rogers and Sammy Hagar.

His relationship with former Fleetwood Mac bandmates became strained after he launched a legal action for unpaid royalties in the mid-1990s. He was not included when Fleetwood Mac were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

Among the many tributes was one from Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks. She said: “The death of Bob is devastating. He was an amazing guitar player and was very funny, sweet and smart.”

Mr. Welch was found dead at his home in Nashville. Police said he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He is survived by his wife Wendy. They had no children.
