Elvis Presley crypt to be sold at auction

Elvis Presley crypt to be sold at auction

THE crypt where Elvis Presley’s body was first laid to rest is to be sold at auction.

When The King passed away on August 16, 1977, his body was placed in the crypt at Forest Hills Cemetery in Memphis along with the remains of his mother, Gladys.

However, the crypt was not to be the singer’s final resting place.  His father, Vernon, applied for permission from the state of Tennessee to have his son buried within the grounds of the Graceland mansion in Memphis.

The go-ahead was finally given and two months after originally being laid to rest in the crypt, Elvis Presley’s remains, together with those of his mother, were reburied at Graceland.

The crypt at Forest Hills, which is within a marble mausoleum, has remained empty since the removal of Elvis’s casket. However, fans still visit the crypt and leave flowers.

Now the crypt is to be sold. It is among a number of items, including jewellery, which have links to the singer which will be sold at the Music Icons auction to be held in Beverly Hills, California, on June 23 and 24.

Bidding is expected to start at $100,000 when the lot comes up at Julien’s Auctions.

Darren Julien from the auction house said the sale represents a unique opportunity for an Elvis fan.

He said: “I just consider that if you’re an ultimate fan of Elvis Presley, it’s an opportunity. It’s definitely a conversation piece. Only one person can say, ‘Hey, I’m going to be buried where Elvis Presley was’.”
