Tributes are paid to author and illustrator Maurice Sendak

TRIBUTES have been paid to the author and illustrator Maurice Sendak who has passed away, aged 83.

Mr. Sendak will be best remembered for his best-selling children’s book Where The Wild Things Are.

The book, which tells the story of Max who is sent to bed without his supper and goes on an adventure to where the wild things are, became a children’s classic and has sold 19 million copies worldwide.

When the book was first published, there was criticism from some quarters that it may scare children, but young readers loved it.

He wrote more than 15 books, including Higglety Pigglety Pop!, Night Kitchen and Outside Over There,  but also illustrated many more books by other authors.

A film based on Where The Wild Things Are was released in 2009 and there have also been numerous animated TV productions based on other books. Indeed, Mr. Sandak worked as producer on some of those productions.

In 1996 President Bill Clinton awarded Mr. Sendak the National Medal of the Arts.

His final picture book, My Brother’s Book, will be published posthumously.
