Peace campaigner Brian Haw passes away

The peace campaigner Brian Haw, who for the past ten years had staged a protest outside Parliament in London, has passed away. He was 62.

He established his peace camp in Parliament Square on June 2, 2001, to raise concerns about sanctions being imposed on Iraq.

His protest increased following the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Over the years the authorities made determined efforts to have him removed from the square.

Parliament passed legislation in 2005 which banned unauthorised protests with a square mile of the building, but Mr Haw’s protest was initially ruled to be outside the Act because it had been in place prior to the new law being implemented.

However, in May 2006 the Court of Appeal said Mr. Haw would need police permission to continue his protest. This was granted, but the size of his peace camp was severely restricted.

Indeed, police on at least one occasion seized many of his placards claiming he had breached the conditions placed on his protest.

But Mr. Haw never gave up and vowed to keep his protest in place for the rest of his life.

He said: “I’m here because our country is committing infanticide, genocide and the looting of nations. I’m determined to be here until they kill me.”

Mr. Haw had been receiving treatment in recent months for lung cancer.
