Tributes are paid to Columbo star Peter Falk

Tributes have been paid to the actor Peter Falk who has died aged 83.

Mr. Falk will be best known as the TV dectective Columbo, the scruffily dressed police officer who never failed to catch the killer.

The part was originally written for Big Crosby, but when he decided not to break his retirement Mr. Falk was given the role.

He played the character for more than 30 years, first appearing as the cigar-chomping detective in 1968.

Mr. Falk won four Emmys for his work on the series but he also enjoyed success in films.

He was nominated twice for an Oscar — in 1960 for Murder Inc and in 1961 for Pocketful of Miracles.

Mr. Falk had lost an eye due to childhood cancer but always refused let this affect his acting career.

His health had failed in recent years and he had been suffering from dementia for some time.

Among the many tributes to be paid to the actor was one from William Link who created the Columbo character.

He said: “Peter was a brilliant actor who had a very endearing quality about him, not only as Columbo but as a human being.”
