Singer Carl Gardner passes away in the US

The singer Carl Gardner has passed away in the United States. He was 83.

Mr. Gardner was a founding member of the Coasters who had hits with Yakety Yak, Charlie Brown and Poison Ivy.

He had been encouraged to form the group by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who went on to write most of the material for the R&B outfit.

They enjoyed their first hit with Down In Mexico (1956).

The line-up of the Coasters was to change at various points over the years but Mr. Gardner, who was born in Texas, remained the lead singer for 50 years.

In recent years he had suffered ill health but battled back to tour with the group.

He was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx in 1993 but after treatment he was back on the road.

Even a stroke in 2004 didn’t end his singing career, but the following year he finally decided to retire.

In recent months he had been battling a heart condition and Alzheimer’s.
