Artist regarded as the father of pop art passes away

THE ARTIST Richard Hamilton, who was regarded as the father of pop art, has passed away. He was 89.

Mr. Hamilton was also regarded as one of the most influential British artists of the late 20th. Century.

He was the creator in the 1950s of what were to become iconic pop art images and was first to use the word “Pop” in his work.

His early work included Just What Is It That Makes Today’s Homes So Different, So Appealing? — an eclectic mix of images which not only included the word ‘pop’ but also would come to be represent the very essence of the genre.

Mr. Hamilton also had a keen interest in technology and would also build computers and work on software projects as part of his artistic endeavours.

He was chosen to design the cover for the Beatles’ White album which was released in 1968.

In an interview for the BBC last year, Mr. Hamilton said: “I’ve always done exactly what I wanted to do and I’ve always had the good fortune to do that”.
