Death toll in Japan could rise to ten thousand

Fears are growing that the death toll caused by the earthquake in Japan could rise to ten thousand.

Many of the deaths occurred after the 8.9 magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami.

Fears also surround the on-going crisis at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

There has been a second blast at the plant which officials say was caused by a hydrogen build-up.

Eleven people were injured in the latest blast, one of them seriously.

A 12 mile exclusion zone around the plant remains in place with reports of heightened levels of radiation in the area.

However, officials have insisted that both blasts did not damage the reactors.

Meanwhile emergency teams from a number of countries are now helping with rescue operations.
