THE death has taken place of Arthur P. Stern who was instrumental in the development of colour television and the transistor radio for the General Electric company. He was 86.
Mr. Stern was born in Budapest and was imprisoned by the Nazis in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp during the war.
After training as an electrical engineer Mr. Stern emigrated to the United States and began working for the General Electric company.
During the early 1950s he worked on the team responsible for the development of the company’s first electronic colour TV system before moving on to had the project to develop GE’s first transistor radio, which went on sale in 1955.
After leaving General Electric in the early 1960s he went on to work on projects which resulted in the development of spread-spectrum systems, which are used for secure wireless communications. He also played a key role in the introduction of satellite navigation for ships.
Over the years Mr. Stern combined his important research and development work with holding key roles in professional associations linked to technology.
He was also a prominent figure in the Jewish community.
Mr. Stern passed away at his home in Beverly Hills.
