Former Liverpool player declared brain dead

The former Liverpool player Avi Cohen has been declared brain dead in Israel  after being injured in a motorcycle accident last week. He was 54.

Mr. Cohen was involved in an accident in Tel Aviv on December 20.

He was regarded as one of Israel’s greatest football players of all time.

Mr. Cohen joined Liverpool in 1979 – becoming the first Israeli to play senior football in England.

During a game against Aston Villa in September in his first year with the Reds he scored an own goal. However, he made up for the mistake in the second half by scoring a goal in a match which ended in a 4-1 victory for Liverpool who retained the league title as a result.

He was with Liverpool when they won the European Cup in 1980.

Mr. Cohen later played for Glasgow Rangers and Maccabi Tel Aviv – a side he was to enjoy three playing spells with.

His son, Tamir Cohen, currently plays for Bolton Wanderers.
