Funeral takes place of respected Ulster historian

The Funeral has taken place of respected historian A.T.Q. Stewart.

He died last week aged 81.

Dr. Anthony Stewart was an academic whose books became best-sellers.

His works on Irish history have been described as being among the most important of the 20th. century.

Among his best known works are The Ulster Crisis (1967), The Narrow Ground: Aspects of Ulster (1997) and The Shape of Irish History (2003) which distilled a lifetime’s scholarship and in many ways challenged sacrosanct assumptions about Ireland’s past.

Dr. Stewart graduated from Queen’s University, Belfast, in 1952 and was to have a close connection to the institution for the rest of his life.

After lecturing at Stranmillis College in Belfast for most of the 1960s he joined the staff at Queen’s as a lecturer in Irish political history. 

He was appointed Reader in Irish History in 1975, a post he was hold until his retirement in 1990.

Dr. Stewart is survived by his wife Anna and sons Christopher and Peter.

His Funeral took place at Roselawn Crematorium on Thursday (December 23).
