Wombles creator Elisabeth Beresford passes away

The creator of The Wombles, Elisabeth Beresford, had died. She was 84.

It was a chance remark by her daughter during a walk on Wimbledon Common which was to prove the spark of inspiration for The Wombles.

Her daughter had said “Isn’t it great on Wombledon Common?” Elisabeth Beresford had replied “That’s where the Wombles live”.

A series of books followed. They featured such characters as Great Uncle Bulgaria, Madame Cholet and Orinoco.

Eventually a television series featuring the characters was made with Bernard Cribbons providing the voices.

Ms Beresford was made an MBE in 1998.
